Lesson 3 Instructor¹s Notes

(Same message posted to course announcement & discussion note area)

We have finished Lesson 2 instructions.  I hope it gave you better ideas on how our class works.  Thanks for your actively participating in Lesson 2 discussions and other lesson activities.  Here are my reflections to help you to enhance your future learning.  Group 1 has done a great job in facilitating our lesson 2 discussions.  Please do continue your good work in the upcoming lessons.

·      Lesson Discussions

o   Don’t miss my reflections on each discussion topic for Lesson 2.

o   Post your responses as early as possible so your good ideas won’t be taken by others.  We have a very heavy schedule of reading assignments.  It is important to complete the lesson readings before the lesson starts.

o   Be sure to respond to the questions raised by others to your postings.  Frequently, the moderators, the classmates, and the instructor ask you questions based on your postings.

o   The minimum number of postings is 6.  Generally, most of students share more than 6.  I know you have more to share. When you read others’ postings, I am sure you have the reflections, and thoughts to share with us.

o   How can I engage in the 2nd postings?  There are many ways you can engage in the 2nd postings.

§  Read & respond to others’ postings.

§  Respond to the questions raised by others to your postings.

§  Respond to the “Follow-Up” questions posted by the instructor.

§  Justify/Improve your initial postings to the key discussion questions.

§  Reflect and analyze your own postings.

§  Compare/contrast different postings.

o   Q: Do we need to read more than just the required readings to respond to the discussion questions?

§  A: Dependents on your knowledge in the discussion questions.  It is always good to read more to challenge yourselves and to learn more.

o   Key word for Subject field: Did you update the Subject field for each of your postings?  Do update with the relevant keywords so our threaded discussions will be easier to follow when we are ready to read and to reply to the postings. See my postings for how we can update the Subject field with key works.

o   Avoid initiating a new thread for our lesson discussion.  Use “reply” to post your responses.

o   If you have any questions for me, avoid posting them in the discussion board. E-mail me so I can address your questions in a timely fashion.

o   Instructional Design

§  Why is it important to learn instructional design for online learning?  Some of us may or may not have chance to teach or to design online learning instructions. Learning about online learning instructional designs is to help us to know how wide human learning can be.  Online technologies are considered to have the potential to extend human learning.  By knowing how far online technologies may extend human learning helps us to teach and design in online or non-online learning environments.  Even though, we may not have the chance to teach or to design online instructions, it is almost impossible that we do not integrate online technology to support our non-online instructions.

o   Instructional Design

§  Online multimedia generally is in more linear format which learning psychologists do consider it is less effective than non-linear format. On the other wide, we see many online learners may learn better with multimedia content due to their multi-sensory learning preferences. As online instructors or instructional designs, how should we face this challenging? What do you think about Khan Academy? Will it replace classroom teachers?  If not, what we should make our online multimedia content more effective?

§  Online technologies and learning interaction.  We must remember online technologies or social media are not inherently social (Siemen & Cormier, 2009) or interactive. Online technologies are social and interactive only when an individual perceive its use to interact with others.  For teachers, they are social and interactive only when we apply interactive online instructional strategies to design effective online learning activities to engage our online learners.

Here are a few questions to help you to challenge your understanding in online learning.

·      Within all six types of interactions, what interactions are more critical to online learning?

·      Technology is critical to online learning.  Why is technology not included in the six types of online interaction?  Shouldn’t learner-interface/technology interaction be critical?

·      If online technology shouldn’t be seen as replicating FTF instructions, what role should online learning play in human learning?

·      Assignment 2: Online Learning Tool Evaluations

o   Prepare it early.  It is not a last-minute type of assignment.  It can be very challenging and it may require you to conduct more research.

o   Try out the tools: It is highly recommended you try out the tools you evaluate and not just observe.

o   Be thorough.  It is more than just filling in the blank.  We need to research, examine, analyze, and reflect thoroughly for each area.

o   Submission method: Share it on Google Docs & submit it to BBLearn Assignment submission (SUBMIT ASSG) since this is a signature assignment.

·      ETC645/ETC655

o   Several of you asked whether you should take ETC655 for the 2nd 8-Week session. If you would like to enroll ETC655 in the 2nd 8-Week session this semester, please e-mail me.  It is a good choice to take ETC645 and ETC655 in the same semester and toward to later in the program.

·      Group work

o   Start your group communication and group planning.

·      Discussion grade & feedback

o   Currently, Lesson 2 moderators and I are reviewing and finalizing our discussion grade and feedback.  When completed, I will forward them to you ASAP.

School Computing Policy

Question: Assignment 2, question 12. School's computing policies. I don't have teaching experiences or any school affiliation yet, what should I do?  Answer: We can select any school's or school district's computing policy. If you know which school you may be teaching it, its policy could be a good one. Or you can just select the one from your local schools.  Generally, schools or school districts should publish their policy on the website. For example, here is the one from the Kyrene school district. https://www.kyrene.org/Page/21478
