Module 4: Instructor’s Notes & Digest #1

Below are a few notes and digests to help us to wrap our last module. Check the course announcement as often as possible because we may have additional shared information to help you conclude the class. After 6/30, continue checking the class announcements and email regularly until you see your grades for the course grade. Often, I may need you to clarify some questions to your units and other requirements. Check the gradebook to make sure you receive grades for each assignment and discussion etc. Module 4 Highlight (6/22-30) One week & two days. Last module. Course Evaluation: 43%

On top of 1 bonus point, if the return rate reaches to 85% , ALL students receive an additional 0.125 point , even the ones not participating. If it reaches 95%, an additional 0.125 point will be added to ALL students. Why are we doing so? It is an experience for you to see how we can "gamify" instructions effectively and by working as a community. Don't miss it. NAU will close the course evaluation on 6/29, Monday . It lets us obtain better understanding on the designs of gamification and in using gamification to support collaboration to build effective class networks and communities. Currently, we reach to:  43%

Gamification for Course Evaluation

ETC545 Course Evaluation is open now. I would like us to experience another “gamification” design. Using Google Classroom for Final Unit & Extra Credit for Presentation

If you plan to use Google Classroom to develop your final unit. Read the information carefully. Which Gmail that you use to create your Google Classroom may determine whom you can give the access to. Institutional Gmail and Google Classroom, like NAU or school's accounts, may not allow people who don't have the e-mail with the institution domain to join. This is because each institution has different security configurations.  For the purposes of our unit review and sharing, there are a few options that we could do it. Optional A: Use your any Gmail account (NAU, personal, or your school's) to create a Google Classroom. To share with classmates: you can use multiple screenshots or a video recording as a show & tell as a grand tour or presentation to highlight your design. You can use Zoom or BBLearn Ultra or others to create a presentation. Therefore, we can see your actual designs and instructions. Extra credit activity: Five points: Creating...

Q: Can I use TpT (Teachers Paid Teachers) materials?

A: It is ok to use any online sources for their assignments as long as we give appropriate attribution (citation) to the content creators. That would mean if we use an image, they need to cite it, if we use a portion of a TpT activity, we need to cite it.   In our class, we should be creating original (new) work. That means it is ok to assemble others' work to help develop our new work, but you should not exclusively submit others' work. So when we are developing a lesson, it would be great to use a portion of an activity found on TpT, but combine that with an original activity that they create, a YouTube video that someone else created, etc. Part of the "newness" can be original creations but also the bringing together of different resources (e.g. the TpT activity and YouTube video) in new ways. Then of course cite everything that you didn't create.   We also need to be cautious that online materials from TpT, ReadWriteThink, ShareMyLesson, YouTu...

Assignment 2: Student Modeling

Q: What is "Student Modeling" in Assignment 2?  A: It is harder to understand. It refers to more like learning analytics, some systems may recommend, suggest certain content, or activities to each user based on their profiles, accessing behaviors etc.  For instance, trending, most viewed pages, top rating, top users, RSS feeds etc. are sent to users as notifications.  Or something notify users of their accessing or learning activities etc.  More specifically, Google Classroom has an "Upcoming" feature on the homepage to notify students of upcoming events, assignments, works etc.  In addition, we can customize the notifications of Google Classroom activities based on our needs. (Settings/Notifications). We could examine whether the system provides any feature to engage students with games, competitive leader-boards and point thresholds.  Adding points to badges is a way to incentive students to earn them and actively work. School Computing Policy

Question: Assignment 2, question 12. School's computing policies. I don't have teaching experiences or any school affiliation yet, what should I do?  Answer: We can select any school's or school district's computing policy. If you know which school you may be teaching it, its policy could be a good one. Or you can just select the one from your local schools.  Generally, schools or school districts should publish their policy on the website. For example, here is the one from the Kyrene school district. https://www.kyrene.org/Page/21478
